Sushi's always fun and teppan grills are entertaining, but there's always a hefty tab at the end of the meal. So imagine my surprise watching aficionados line up at Maki Yaki 31 Japanese Grill (270 Bristol Street, #108, Costa Mesa; 714-557-0906) for fresh handmade sushi, sashimi, udon noodles, and teriyaki for about what you'd pay for a fast-food hamburger meal. The dining room is definitely cramped, but the food is first-rate. The sushi and sashimi are superfresh, and the plates are huge. My favorite is a spicy pork combo with a mountain of meat, steamed rice, a salad, a California roll, mixed tempura, and miso soup for under $10.  - Pete Johnson -
